Barrier-Free Routes

If you require use of the Barrier-Free routes during the festival, we recommend printing this page and bringing it with you.

VIU Bus Loop to Buildings 355 and 356

Most buses stop on the east side of the loop, next to Buildings 250 and 255. As you exit the bus, turn right and go in the direction of the construction area. Go past the steps and, before you reach the construction area, take the ramp with the white railings. At the top of the ramp, turn right and walk back in the direction of Bus Shelter A. Next to Bus Shelter A, you’ll see a ramp to your left that zigzags up to a building that has two blue awnings. After you pass under the blue awnings, turn right around the corner of the building. In front of you, there should be a sandwich board with a map of this part of the barrier-free route. Go in the door marked 127A (this is an entrance to the Culinary Institute), and follow the blue dots on the floor until you reach an elevator. Press 2 in the elevator. When you exit the elevator, follow the blue dots and exit the building. Go up the ramp outside the door, and you will be facing the Campus Store (bookstore), which is in the library building. Turn left onto the wide walkway and go to the corner of the library building. Go around the corner, and you’ll be facing a wall sculpture with four human hands oriented in four directions. A small plaque on the wall refers to this as the “Unity Sculpture – Tsawalk.” Go in the building entrance to your right, marked Building 305. Do not enter the bookstore, which is inside a second set of doors. Instead, take the short passage to the right of the stairs. Go through the unmarked grey door on your right and follow the hall around a corner, past a set of washrooms, and through a doorway with an exit sign above it. You will then see an elevator on your left. Take the elevator.

To reach Building 356, take this elevator in the library building to level 3. When you exit the elevator, turn right and right again in order to exit the library. Outside the door, turn right immediately and take the level walkway to the corner of the building. You will pass under a circular sign with the Starbucks logo. Turn right at the corner of the building. You are now on a very wide walkway. After a slight curve and a slight upward slope, you will pass Building 355 on your left. Continue on the walkway to the next building, which has a sort of canopy over the main entrance. Go under the canopy, and the entrance will be on your left. This is Building 356, and Room 109 is on your left immediately inside the entrance.

To reach Building 355, from the library, take the previously mentioned elevator to level 4. When you exit the elevator, turn left and exit the building through a door on your left. Outside, you will find some steps but also a ramp that takes you onto a sort of footbridge over the grounds below. When you reach the other end of the footbridge, immediately turn right twice, and you’ll find a walkway that takes you to the back of Building 355. There is a bit of a slope in the walkway, but there are no stairs. Once you enter the building, turn left for the Festival table and Room 203; turn right for Room 211.

To go from Building 355 to Building 356: Exit Building 355 at the back, on level 2 between Rooms 203 and 211. Outside, turn right and take the walkway to the next building (356). Once inside, turn right and follow the hall until you see the Office of the Dean at the end. Just before the Office of the Dean, there will be a passage to your left that leads to an open area or atrium. Take that passage and turn left as soon as you enter the atrium. There you’ll find an elevator. Take it down to level 1. When you exit the elevator, turn left and left again. Room 109 will be on your right. To go from Building 356 to Building 355: take the elevator to level 2. When you exit the elevator, turn right and right again, into a short passage. Turn right into the hall and follow it around to the end, where there is a door on your left to exit the building. Take the outside walkway to the next building (355). Enter the building, and go left to reach Room 203; right to reach Room 211.

VIU Bus Loop to Shq’apthut – The Gathering Place (Building 170)

Most buses stop on the east side of the loop, next to Buildings 250 and 255. As you exit the bus, turn right and go in the direction of the construction area. Walk past Buildings 200 and 205, which will be on your left. The construction site will be on your right. When you reach the end of this walkway, you’ll be facing the corner of a parking lot. There will be a path to your left that goes directly toward a totem pole; Building 170 will be on your right as you approach the totem pole.

A Note about the Route from Parking Lot H:

Note that Lot H is open to the public after 5 pm and on weekends. According to VIU’s parking page, “Persons with a documented disability who display a valid special permit . . . can park in any designated parking stall, including those in Employees-Only lots, when designated Disabled Parking is not available or not convenient” – and payment for disabled parking is voluntary. The path that is shown on NGFF’s map from Lot H to Building 355 goes past Tamagawa Gardens on your left. Beyond that, you’ll cross the main stair route and continue straight ahead on the path, which takes you to an entrance at the end of Building 355. Inside the building, about halfway down the hall, there is an elevator on your left. Press 2 in the elevator to reach Room 203. The elevator has front and rear exits. You’ll exit the elevator on the opposite side from the one where you entered it.
